The Principles-based Assessment for Cybersecurity Toolkit (PACT) is a tool for assessing the toughest cybersecurity problems. CACR chief policy analysts developed the tool in collaboration with NSWC Crane. As a naval installation, Crane uses technologies that many would consider atypical, and which require custom cybersecurity solutions.

Securing research data, especially meeting new, stricter regulatory and other cybersecurity requirements, is becoming a challenge for both IU researchers and campus units that support research.
To help them navigate this complex landscape, CACR, UITS Research Technologies, and OVPIT Information Security are partnering to reduce the cybersecurity burden on researchers while enabling improved cybersecurity for IU research projects.

IRIS-HEP
The Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High-Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP) is a large-scale, collaborative initiative, led by Princeton University, to manage and protect the unprecedented torrent of data produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Cern, Switzerland, and to ensure that it can be used by scientists here in the United States and around the world. IU’s role in the project is to oversee security of Open Science Grid, a high-throughput computing platform that allows scientists at any institution, even those without high-end compute resources, to work with massive data sets such as that coming from the Large Hadron Collider.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
To better understand how to effectively and securely work with machine learning and artificial intelligence researchers and to improve OmniSOC’s capabilities, in 2019 CACR and the OmniSOC team began working with Dr. Jay Yang and his team at Rochester Institute of Technology to implement Dr. Yang’s ASSERT research prototype with the OmniSOC. ASSERT is a machine learning system which automatically categorizes attacker behaviors derived from alerts and other information into descriptive models in order to help a SOC operator more effectively identify related attacker behavior. CACR staff are working with OmniSOC engineers and researchers from Rochester Institute of Technology to validate the methodology and test the research prototype for use at OmniSOC.
